Gober’s mother worked as a nurse in an operating theatre. One of her first operations involved amputating a leg. This event inspired
Gober’s series of wax body parts. The series began in 1990 with a wax cast of the artist’s own leg, complete with trouser leg, sock and shoe. It included implanted hair, just like this work in the museum’s collection.
