old masters
Pynas belonged to a small group of Amsterdam painters who journeyed to Rome at the beginning of the 17th century and was captivated by Adam Elsheimer’s small history paintings. Elsheimer was a German master renowned for the lighting effects that Pynas was also seeking in this nocturnal flight of the Holy Family: a full moon, a starry sky, and a campfire in the darkness.
