applied arts & design

Michael Thonet was a pioneer in the furniture industry. He developed a method of using steam and pressure to bend round wooden strips into any shape required. Various components could be screwed together into a chair or table, just like a kit. Unlike many related Thonet furniture, the café chair A 14 can be considered timeless. This modest chair was designed in 1859 and has been in production without interruption since then and has proved a remarkable commercial success. Many tens of millions have been sold.
