Rembrandt van Rijn

Study for one of the Syndics, Volkert Jansz.

c. 1662
prints & drawings

This is one of three surviving preliminary studies for the famous painting 'The Syndics' in the Rijksmuseum. It shows the figure second on the left in the painting, identified as the Amsterdambased cloth merchant Volckert Jansz. Rembrandt has rendered both the figure and his surroundings in bold, wide strokes of the reed pen and brush. He has not bothered about details, for this is a mere study, not a finished drawing intended for sale.
