Roy Lichtenstein started painting abstract expressionistic works in the late fifties, but at the start of the sixties he turned to Pop Art. His first solo exhibition in the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York in 1962 was a great success. He found his inspiration in comic books. He copied the illustrations from these books onto large canvases, including the pattern of dots, which appeared in comic books because of the cheap printing technique used. From the middle of the 1960s, Lichtenstein also turned to silk-screen prints and he painted, in 'cartoon style', after the works of Cézanne and Mondriaan. Later Lichtenstein also made sculptures for public spaces.
