Hans Bol

The Month February (Pisces)

c. 1581
drawings & prints

Bol’s conception of the landscape was strongly influenced by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The introduction of topographical elements was a new development. In February people are skating on Antwerp’s frozen moat with its Roode Poort and medieval tower; in the background is the Sint Jacobskerk.

This print is based on a drawing by Hans Bol
