The beautiful Barbara is a fictional martyr whose father supposedly shut her up in a tower to keep young men at bay. When she converted to Christianity he tried to kill her with his own hands. Instead it was he who was struck dead - by lightning. Pious Catholics believed that a glimpse of the popular Barbara with chalice and host could protect them if death came unforeseen.
