applied arts & design
This French ivory triptych was originally painted in bright colours. Traces of the polychrome decoration can still be seen on the ivory. The panels are constructed horizontally within gothic arches. The Passion of Christ is cut in relief from the ivory. The lower scenes depict, from left to right: the pieces of silver being handed over to Judas, the Judas kiss, Pilate washing his hands in innocence, and the chastisement of Christ. The scenes above, from left to right: Christ carrying the cross, the crucifixion, and the descent from the cross.
