The writer Nicolaes Heinsius (1656-1718) and his family are portrayed drinking tea on this tea table. Heinsius wrote the first Dutch picaresque novel 'Den vermakelijken avanturier' in 1695. Heinsius, wearing a large wig, had to be portrayed unrecognisably because he had committed a murder more than twenty years before. As a travelling doctor he led an adventurous life for years. We can see that around 1700 tea was drunk from saucers. Slurping was an expression of refinement.
