Following their flight from Egypt, the Israelites managed to cross the River Jordan when the waters miraculously parted momentarily. The two men on the left are carrying the Ark of the Covenant. The foremost figure is a self portrait of the painter, who deceased a year
after completing this painting. The couple standing on the right in the foreground are the Amsterdam based wine merchant Isaac van Gerwen and his wife Duijfken Roch who commissioned the painting.
