The Italian artist Lucio Fontana was a pioneer of abstract art in Italy from 1925. During the Second World War in Argentina he wrote his Manifesto Bianco (White Manifesto) about 'spazialismo' (spatialism). He achieved this through slicing or boring through his monochrome painted canvases.
