A simple palette is the sign of the true colourist, said Philippe Zilcken in an early publication about his colleague Breitner. Weaker artists employ ‘almost all the paint manufacturers’ aids’ and produce lacklustre pictures. Breitner makes do with seven or eight paints and lacks for nothing. The rich colouring of this work proves Zilcken right. These are Amsterdam’s western islands in winter.
