Jacob Adriaensz. Backer
Boy with a beret
1630 - 1640
old masters
Although this painting is often called a portrait, that is probably untrue. It is more likely to be a head study or 'mug shot', like so many produced by Rembrandt and his studio. It is carried out with considerable speed and shows Backer as a master painter. The fast painting technique is probably characteristic for Backer's work in the period around 1635.
