Virgin and child

c. 1520
old masters

Mary caresses the infant Jesus, with a landscape in the background. The balustrade and the arched form create a sense of depth. On the balustrade are a piece of bread, a pewter bowl of porridge and a red cushion. The child is about to be fed. The porridge and bread refer to the mercy of God through Mary and Jesus Christ.
