Dieric Bouts

Head of Christ

c. 1470
Old masters

The painting by Bouts depicts the face of Christ, who looks at the spectator with eyes half-closed and wears jewels on his red robe. The face shows no personal features. Yet the work is thought of as a portrait, although not one 'made from life'. It is the 'true face' (Vera Effigies) of Christ, as he is depicted based on passed down tradition.
