Meester van het Johannes-Altaar

Elizabeth fleeing with her son

1510 - 1520
old masters

This panel was originally part of a polyptych devoted to John the Baptist. Originally it was painted on both sides. Later the sides of the panel were split which resulted in two separate paintings. Depicted at the left is Zacharias being killed. To the left the flight of Elisabeth and her son John the Baptist from Herod’s massacre of the firstborn in Bethlehem can be seen.

The altar piece was painted for a St. John church, perhaps for the church in Gouda. In addition to this panel, the museum owns another panel from this altar piece. A third panel is in Philadelphia.
