Piet Mondriaan

Composition with colour fields

1917
modern art

This composition by Mondrian dates from the year he co founded the artistic group De Stijl. It marks the transition from his early work to his later abstract compositions: the blocks float against the white ground and the colours are still rather muted. Mondrian also painted the frame as well as the canvas.
