Jessica Meis asked

Hi, Do you know where the separate detail studies for the hands and face are? Are there any other studies like this by Veronese in the world? Thanks, Jessica Meis

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Jessica, The detail studies are not in our collection and unfortunately I do not know the exact locations of these drawings. Maybe they are in the catalogue by W.R. Rearick, 'The Art of Paolo Veronese 1528-1588' which was published on the occasion of the exhibition on the artist in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, 1988-1989. Maybe you can find comparable drawings in this publication as well. Another study like this, a study of a standing man, is in our collection and you can find it on our website as well (inventory number I 49 recto). Kind regards, Roselien van Wijngaarden

Study for St Lawrence in the Altarpiece 'Saints Lawrence, Jerome and Prosper' in the Cappella Malipiero in S. Giacomo dell'Orio, Venice

Paolo Veronese (in c. 1573-1575)

This is a study for the central figure in the altar painting of St Jerome, St Lawrence and St Prosper in the Cappella Malipiero in San Giacomo dell’Orio in Venice. In this study Veronese limited himself to depicting the saints’ robes known as a dalmatic. He has given only a schematic indication of the heads and hands; he made separate detail studies for these.
