Like other French artists of his time, Boucher was intrigued by figures in Chinese costume. This piece of 'chinoiserie' shows an old man sitting with a fishing rod and a boy holding up a parasol. A Chinese lady lies sweet talking the man. In the background is a pagoda. The painting was possibly intended for the boudoir of Madame de Pompadour in Château Bellevue.
