Pierrot with Guitar
Gino Severini (in 1923)
The masked figure has been identified as Pierrot or Pulcinella, both characters from the Italian Commedia dell'arte. Severini painted and drew numerous Pierrots, Pulcinellas and Harlequins in the mid 1920s. The subject and naturalistic style are typical of his so-called Neo Classical period.
