Saint John Writing the Gospel

Anonymous , near Dieric Bouts (in c. 1465)

The Latin on the paper says: 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God'. John begins his gospel with these words. The devil, however, tried to prevent him writing further by stealing his ink-well.
