Paysage avec nuages roses

Yves Tanguy (in 1928)

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen acquired this painting for the surrealist collection in 2007. It is the first work of Tanguy in a public collection in the Netherlands. This painting by Tanguy is part of a series of twelve works commissioned by André Breton, the founder of the surrealist movement. Tanguy would receive a fixed salary if he produced 12 paintings a year; these paintings then went to Breton who sold them. Tanguy, however, only painted eight and Breton terminated the contract. The painting shows a nocturnal landscape in a silent, mysterious atmosphere in which various shell-like and other organic shapes can be found. A nocturnal landscape is exceptional in Tanguy's work.
