This landscape dates from the Parisian period of Jacob Maris, between 1865 and 1871. At the end of his stay in France, Maris once again turned to landscapes. In 1869 he painted at least fourteen landscapes, including studies for the celebrated ‘View of Montigny-sur-Loing’ from 1870. In those years he also visited the French coast, where he painted works such as ‘Normandy Beach’ (1869), now in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht, and ‘Fishing boat in a river mouth on the Breton coast’ (1870). This ‘Boat on a beach’ probably dates from the same period. It is a simple sketch which is reminiscent of the studies of ships and smacks on the Normandy coast by Adolphe Hervier.
